Violin maker in Montpellier
When the
Ventral pin becomes a practical question
Friday July 18th, 11 a.m., Auditorium, Fabre Museum
Among all musical instruments, the violin is certainly
the most renown but also the most mysterious. By the essence of its qualities,
the transparency of its varnish, the calculation of its measurements… And
mostly for its belly button (ventral pin), a very small hole of 1mm diameter,
perfectly circular, dug methodically at the center of all Italian creations
since the very beginning. With Andrea Amati (1535) until the end of the Golden
Period of the Cremonese masters (1750).
Assumptions are numerous on this subject: some think
it is the mark of a compass, other talk about an esthetic – maniac – touch of
the makers. But no one before Yann Poulain thought that it could simply be a
practical particularity.
